Days until Christmas and every UK date
Count the days, sleeps, weeks and working days to Christmas, Easter, half term, bank holidays, results days or a date of your own, with a live clock.
Counted from 14 October 2026, there are 72 days until Christmas Day on Friday, 25 December 2026: 10 weeks and 2 days. Today is left out and the target day is included. The live countdown works from the date on your own device, so its figure drops by one at each midnight.

How many days until Easter, half term, the next bank holiday or a birthday? This countdown answers for the United Kingdom, with the public holidays of each nation. It holds school dates for Wales and Northern Ireland and the 2027 exam results days. It also gives weeks, working days, sleeps and a live clock.
How the count works
The count is the number of calendar days between today and the chosen day. It starts from the date your phone or computer shows, leaves today out and includes the target day. So the day before an event shows one day to go, and on the day the result simply says it is today. Under Start date and more options, any other start date can replace today.
Counted from Wednesday, 14 October 2026, the day these dates were checked, Christmas Day on Friday, 25 December 2026 is 72 days away. That total is the 17 days left in October after the 14th, all 30 days of November and the first 25 days of December. In other units the gap is 10 weeks and 2 days, or 2 months and 11 days, and Christmas Eve is one day closer at 71 days. Counting from a later date gives a smaller figure, one less for each day that passes, until the result reads today. A countdown elsewhere can differ by one when it counts both the start and the end, or when it follows another time zone.
Yearly events roll on to the next year the day after they pass. Christmas, Easter or Bonfire Night therefore always show their next date, never a negative number. Each of these sums can be checked against the worked cases further down.
How many sleeps until Christmas?
Exactly as many sleeps as days, because every day still to go ends with one night in bed. Counted from 14 October 2026 that makes 72 sleeps, and on Christmas Eve only one sleep is left.
The Sleeps row in the result gives the same figure in the words children use. From the first door of an Advent calendar on 25 December 2026, Christmas Day is 24 days away, one sleep for each remaining door up to Christmas Eve. When the presents are under the tree, the Christmas dice game shares them out from one phone.
Weeks, weekdays and bank holidays in between
From 14 October 2026 to Christmas the count is 10 weeks and 2 days, with 51 weekdays and 20 weekend days in between. Weekdays are Monday to Friday strictly between the two dates, so neither the start day nor the event day counts. Working days are those weekdays less any public holiday that falls on one, and the result names how many were taken out.
| Result row | Figure |
|---|---|
| In weeks | 10 weeks and 2 days |
| In months | 2 months and 11 days |
| Weekdays in between | 51 |
| Working days in between | 51 (50 in Scotland) |
| Weekend days in between | 20 |
| Sleeps | 72 |
| Day of the year | 359 of 365 |
Scotland has one working day fewer because St Andrew's Day, Monday, 30 November 2026, falls in between, while Northern Ireland matches the 51 of England and Wales. Schedule 1 of the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 lists bank holidays separately for each of the three jurisdictions, and GOV.UK publishes the resulting dates. The nation is chosen in the same options panel as the start date. Only those national days off are taken out, never a local holiday, a firm's own closure or annual leave.
A bank holiday on a weekend moves to a substitute day, usually the next Monday. Boxing Day 2026 is a Saturday, so GOV.UK lists Monday, 28 December 2026 instead. In 2027 Christmas Day itself is a Saturday, which pushes the two days off to 27 December 2027 and 28 December 2027. The working days count uses these substitutes.
Easter, Pancake Day and Mothering Sunday
Easter Sunday falls on 28 March 2027 in 2027 and on 16 April 2028 in 2028, and several other dates move with it. The Church of England's Tables and Rules keep the old Prayer Book definition. Easter Day is the first Sunday after the full moon falling on or next after 21 March. The tool works the date out with the same calendar rule rather than looking it up.
| Event | 2027 | 2028 |
|---|---|---|
| Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) | 9 February 2027 | 29 February 2028 |
| Mother's Day (Mothering Sunday) | 7 March 2027 | 26 March 2028 |
| Easter Sunday | 28 March 2027 | 16 April 2028 |
| Father's Day | 20 June 2027 | 18 June 2028 |
| Valentine's Day | 14 February 2027 | 14 February 2028 |
Shrove Tuesday, better known as Pancake Day, comes 47 days before Easter Sunday. In 2028 it lands on 29 February 2028, a date that only exists in a leap year. Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday in Lent, three weeks before Easter, which is why the UK Mother's Day wanders through March and early April. Father's Day is fixed to the third Sunday in June instead.
Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays in England and Wales and in Northern Ireland, while Scotland has Good Friday only. That is why counts of days off across Easter differ by nation. The Easter Act 1928, which would have pinned Easter to a fixed Sunday in April, was never brought into force.
Halloween, Bonfire Night and Hogmanay
Halloween on 31 October and Bonfire Night on 5 November come within a week of each other. Counted from 14 October 2026, Halloween is 17 days away and Bonfire Night, also called Guy Fawkes Night, 22 days. Neither is a public holiday, so neither shortens a working week.
New Year's Eve counts differently from every other event. Its live clock runs to midnight at the end of 31 December, the moment the new year starts, rather than to the start of the day. In Scotland the same night is Hogmanay, and 2 January follows as an extra Scottish day off. The day count to New Year's Eve is 78 days from 14 October 2026.
Why are there no school dates for England or Scotland?
Because no single calendar exists there: local councils set term dates for their own schools, and some schools, such as academies, set their own. GOV.UK's page on school term and holiday dates points families to the local council for that reason. So the tool shows no official date for England or Scotland and leaves half term dates to be typed in by hand.
Wales and Northern Ireland do publish national dates. In Wales the Welsh Ministers set them by a direction under the Education Act 2002, while the Department of Education in Northern Ireland publishes its school holidays. In Wales the autumn half term runs from 26 October 2026 to 30 October 2026, while in Northern Ireland it covers 2 days, 29 October 2026 and 30 October 2026.
| Holiday | Wales | Northern Ireland |
|---|---|---|
| Autumn half term | 26 October 2026 to 30 October 2026 | 29 October 2026 to 30 October 2026 |
| Christmas holidays | From 19 December 2026 | 21 December 2026 to 1 January 2027 |
| February half term | 8 February 2027 to 12 February 2027 | 11 February 2027 to 12 February 2027 |
| Easter holidays | 20 March 2027 to 4 April 2027 | 25 March 2027 to 2 April 2027 |
| Summer holidays | From 21 July 2027 | From 1 July 2027 |
During a holiday the figure turns to the days left until its last day. Once the stored dates have passed, the tool says no date has been published yet. A school's own training days, often called INSET days, are not included, and the weekdays row still counts holiday weeks rather than school days.
Results days are set nationally. The Joint Council for Qualifications puts A level results day on Thursday, 12 August 2027 and GCSE results day on Thursday, 19 August 2027. Qualifications Scotland, still widely known as the SQA, gives results on Tuesday, 10 August 2027. From 14 October 2026 that leaves 302 days, 309 days and 300 days.
The live clock, GMT and BST
The live clock counts days, hours, minutes and seconds to midnight at the start of the target day, in the time zone your device is set to. It only appears when counting from today, because a start date of your own has no current moment.
According to GOV.UK, the clocks go forward one hour at 1am on the last Sunday in March and back one hour at 2am on the last Sunday in October. The months with the clocks one hour ahead are British Summer Time (BST), and the rest of the year runs on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The next change after 14 October 2026 is on Sunday, 25 October 2026, when the clocks go back and that Sunday lasts 25 hours.
The clock counts real hours, so a span across a change is one hour longer or shorter than the days times 24. To Christmas that gives 1,729 hours instead of 1,728. The day count never changes. When the clocks go forward on Sunday, 28 March 2027, which is also Easter Sunday, that day has 23 hours. Counted as an event, the next clock change runs to the midnight that begins its Sunday.
A birthday, a trip or any date of your own
Any date between 1900 and 2200 can be counted, either once or every year. A one-off date that has already gone counts back instead and shows the days since then. A yearly date such as a birthday moves to the next year once it has passed.
A birthday on 29 February is a special case. In a common year, one that is not a leap year, the tool marks it on 28 February; that is its own choice, not a legal rule. A time can be added too: once an hour is chosen, the minutes follow in 5-minute steps, and the live clock then counts to that moment instead of midnight.
An optional name, such as a holiday or a wedding, travels only in the page's link after the # sign. Browsers never send that part of an address to a server. The link also holds the event, the nation, the date, the time and any start date, so a countdown can be sent to someone else. For the date on which a State Pension begins, the state pension age calculator works it out first.
Dates of other calendars, such as Diwali, Eid or Orthodox Christmas, are not built in, and nor are other countries' dates. Once such a date is known, it can be entered by hand. The counting runs in the browser, and nothing typed is stored by the site.
Frequently asked questions
Is Christmas Eve counted?
Yes, as one of the days on the way. On Christmas Eve the count to Christmas Day shows 1 day left. Christmas Eve is also an event of its own, 71 days away when counted from 14 October 2026.
Do you count today?
No. The count leaves today out and takes in the day being counted to, so it is the number of midnights still to pass. On the day itself the result says it is today.
How many working days until Christmas?
Counted from 14 October 2026, there are 51 working days in England and Wales and in Northern Ireland, and 50 in Scotland, which has one more holiday on the way. Days taken as annual leave are not deducted.
When is Easter 2027?
Easter Sunday 2027 is 28 March 2027, so Good Friday and Easter Monday fall two days before and one day after. Pancake Day comes earlier, on 9 February 2027, and Mother's Day on 7 March 2027.
When is the next bank holiday in Scotland?
After 14 October 2026 it is St Andrew's Day on Monday, 30 November 2026, 47 days away. For England and Wales it is Christmas Day, 72 days away. The next holiday event always shows the coming one for the nation chosen in the options panel.
Why does the clock show an extra hour?
Because the clocks go back from BST to GMT on the way, and that Sunday has 25 hours. The live clock counts real hours, while the day count stays the same. In March, when an hour is lost, it shows one hour fewer.
Does it work for a date in the past?
Yes. A one-off date entered by hand counts back and shows the days since then, for example since a wedding or a move. A yearly date never shows the past: it moves on to its next date.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
No. The counting happens in the browser, and nothing you enter is stored by the site. A name you give your date stays in the link after the # sign, which browsers never send to a server.
